The Buoys blasted out of the local punk rock scene, and in just a few short years, released three killer EPs together, playing sold-out shows across the country that have earned them a devoted following and engrained this Sydney based all-woman rock band into Australian music culture. From coming in at #85 on Triple J’s Hottest 100 of 2021 with ‘Lie To Me Again’, to touring with the likes of The Dandy Warhols, Arctic Monkeys, DMA’S and Ball Park Music, The Buoys themselves are devoted to playing high-octane shows, and as a result have cemented their place as an unmissable live show experience.
The Buoys carve out a fresh space in the indie guitar scene, traversing themes of uncertainty to curiosity, disappointment to determination, all through honest lyricism and backed by the weight of meaningful instrumentation, paying homage to the music you know and love, while leaving just enough room to steer their sound into unchartered waters. 2023 was a huge year for The Buoys, releasing singles ‘Settle Petal’, ‘I Want You’ and ‘Fight Back Time’, the latter a collaboration with Norway’s Sløtface. All releases saw both domestic and international playlisting, including Local Noise covers and an Indielista cover (Norway) as well as NMF (Aus, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Denmark). It wouldn’t be The Buoys without squeezing in extensive touring around such major projects. 2023 has seen The Buoys play shows with the likes of Arctic Monkeys, DMAs, Royal Blood, IDLES and embark on the Spilt Milk festival tour, they are after all a live band that lives and breathes live music.
Prior to this, The Buoys started 2022 with a bang, securing a spot at #85 in Triple J’s Hottest 100 with their hit single ‘Lie To Me Again’, becoming the most playlisted Australian act across streaming platforms in it’s release week, receiving a full rotation triple j add, cover placement on Spotify’s ‘Indie Arrivals’, and charting in Shazam’s Top 100, and Spotify AU Viral 50. This followed a packed 2021 touring schedule of sold out headline shows across Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. The Buoys solidified their spot as front runners in the Australian music scene, spending weeks on Triple J’s most played and cracking the top 5 with their singles ‘Lie To Me Again’ and ‘Bad Habit’ off their third EP ‘Unsolicited Advice for Your DIY Disaster’.
The Buoys recorded their most recent body of work, their debut album ‘Lustre’, with Chris Collins in the quiet bushland of the NSW North Coast. Being their debut album, this is the first time The Buoys have had the space and boundless opportunity to explore their full sonic capabilities, delving into a range of genres that allow an album to be painted with various styles all while staying true to what The Buoys do best, telling stories and playing memorable music.
