The Joy Hotel formed in Spring 2019, their initial rehearsals taking place in the living room of a tenement flat in Glasgow’s East End. Luke and Emme had a shared love for the duetting harmony found in old country music, the cinematic arrangements prominent in psych and desert rock as well as the timeless melodies of sixties and seventies pop.
This framework for their songwriting, in addition to the distinct playing styles of the rest of the band, gave them the strong foundation upon which they developed a dynamic and genre-bending sound.
In late Autumn 2021, the band travelled down to Rockfield Studios in Monmouth, Wales with producer Chris McCrory to capture twelve songs live to tape with resident engineers Nick Brine and Chris Ramsay. Seventy hours of footage documenting the process of the recording were captured by videographer Rosie Sco and subsequently edited down to a short film which guides the viewer through the making of the band’s debut album.
With headline shows selling out across the UK, an album set for release, a documentary to accompany it, and a long list of UK and European dates to come in 2023, The Joy Hotel are set for a big year.
